Stafford-Clark décrit une psychopathe. Ce qui me frappe, chez Ruth Rendell, c’est qu’elle nous présente souvent une jeune femme qui est belle, attirante et non dépourvue de qualités mais qui correspond, en tout ou en partie, à la description qu’en fait Stafford-Clark. C’est un leitmotiv. Elle a dû souffrir elle-même de la présence d’une telle femme dans son entourage familial.
